The industrial Internet transforms the way people and machines interact using data and analytics in new ways to drive efficiency gains, accelerate productivity and achieve overall operational excellence. Ultimately, the industrial Internet enables combining brilliant machines with best-in-class analytics to deliver valuable new insights that were never before possible. The results of these powerful analytic insights can be revolutionary for business by transforming technological infrastructures, reducing unplanned downtime and maximizing profitability and efficiency.
GE believes the industrial Internet unlocks new possibilities and drives transformation by connecting brilliant machines, advanced analytics and people at work. By connecting machines and industrial big data, the industrial Internet enables better understanding of industrial operations and enables driving them to their fullest potential based on key parameters such as market demand, weather conditions, plant environment, load balancing, and other business objectives.
The industrial Internet can lead businesses to a new wave of productivity gains and performance. Networked machines with embedded sensors and advanced analytics tools allow these businesses to leverage data in context to predictions and provide real-time operational intelligence to those who need it to make the best decisions. Solutions powered by the industrial Internet can help monitor processes and control loops so if a process becomes inefficient, operators can quickly identify what has changed and why. Getting to the root cause of the issue provides better insight into process and control problems to minimize deviations that stray outside of preset parameters.
GE’s business is making the industrial Internet real, helping customers connect their machines, data, insights and people to improve performance, uptime and productivity. In collaboration with GE, FogHorn provides an edge intelligence platform that integrates many different heterogeneous edge applications to support widely distributed industrial networks. FogHorn is an integral part of the GE Predix ecosystem and was featured at the 2015 GE Minds + Machines conference.

One of NEC’s prime focus areas is to drive Internet of Things solutions. NEC’s industrial IoT solution supports next-generation manufacturing, leveraging NEC’s technological strengths in areas such as smart mobility, image recognition, big data analysis and software-defined networking (SDN). The solution includes prediction analysis to automatically identify irregularities in large volumes of data and highly-accurately predict product quality and performance.
Information and communications technologies-related data is rapidly growing on a global scale, and as a result, huge amounts of data (big data) are expected to be generated in the near future. IoT technologies open the way for collecting big data from many different goods that were traditionally not subject to control. As sophisticated analyses of these digital data are conducted, extra value will be discovered.
NEC aims to make positive use of IoT in extensive areas including social infrastructure, such as water demand forecast and traffic monitoring, security management for communities and for key facilities and energy management, in addition to the corporate use of IoT by manufacturers, distributors, transport operators and others.
In addition to NEC’s Industrial IoT for the manufacturing sector, NEC will be working to broaden its lineup of solutions tailored to a broad array of industries and business types.

Edge Computing is the evolution of embedded computing in the age of the IoT, i.e. the addition of system-level connectivity and services to embedded (industrial) computers to provide the required infrastructure for business-critical industrial IoT systems. Edge Computing also defines the opportunity at the edges of IT, OT and ICT technology eco-systems, and thus exploits the convergence of these eco-systems brought about by the IIoT. Edge Computing products provide a computing continuum from the sensor-to-the-cloud (this is also the basis of Fog Computing of which Edge Computing is an important part) and thus address the shortcomings of cloud computing in an industrial context (e.g. latency, security, resilience, Datacom costs, dependencies). As such, Edge Computing is regarded by many technical commentators as complementing and even replacing cloud computing for many business-critical IoT solutions. ADLINK’s deep experience in embedded computing and connecting the unconnected makes us well-positioned to leverage one of the next huge developments in business and industrial computing.
